Many recent studies have revealed that approximately 95% of all PC's have had at least one form if not several forms of adware or spyware installed on the hard drive.

What are these these little spy files and programs and how did they get on your PC?

Adware is short for "advertiser supported software", this allows shareware authors to make money from a product, other than by selling it to the users. Usually when you are downloading a "free software" it has one form or another of ad ware installed on it. This helps support the cost of being in business. When purchasing software adware will not be installed on it or when converting from a "free" or "trial" version to a registered version.  There are several large media companies that offer the software providers this option to place banner ads in their products in exchange for a portion of the revenue from banner sales. This way, you don't have to pay for the software and the developers are still getting paid. If you find the banners annoying, there is usually an option to remove them, by paying the regular licensing fee. This is the legitimate use of ad ware.

Adware is also installed on your computer in many other illegitimate ways and usually it will run in the back ground undetected. It can have the power to alter what you are seeing as you surf the internet. Banners might be replaced with alternative banners that the adware wants you to see and click on etc. Ad ware can be transferred onto your computer from just about any type of file download or from a spam email it can also have the ability to continuously reset your home page to a home page that it wants you to see. It can also cause dozens of pop-up ads to appear on your computer just by turning it on. It can also ad toolbars to your browser (internet explorer). They can also perform much more malicious acts that can frustrate you and dramatically slow down your computer. You usually will not find adware or spyware on your computer to delete them, this would eliminate the effectiveness of the ad ware or spy ware that was installed.

Spyware is very similar in design to adware but usually will astonishingly compromise your privacy. It is installed on your computer in the same way as adware as mentioned above, usually both items are installed at the same time. It also can be installed to spy on PC user activity. Once installed the spyware has the ability monitor all your surfing habits, PC user habits, email information, etc. This personal, sensitive information will be transmitted by the spy ware continuously using your Internet connection. It reports statistical data to the "mothership". While according to the privacy policies of the advertising companies, there will be no sensitive or identifying data collected from your system and you shall remain anonymous, it still remains the fact, that you have a "live" server sitting on your PC that is sending information about you and your surfing habits to a remote location. This is the legitimate use of spyware.

Other legitimate uses of spyware:  One form of spyware is used by "spy software programs". These are PC surveillance tools that allow a user to monitor all kinds of activity on a computer. The installer of the spyer or spyware should have authorization by the user or be the owner or administrator over that computer for installation. But these relaxed policies are almost unenforceable and the responsibility is left up to the discretion of the spy software purchaser. 

The illegitimate uses of ad ware and Spyware to broadcast and retrieve this type of personal, sensitive information and control your computer is unlimited and I will leave that up to your imagination. 

Adware and spyware are a legitimate form of advertising and network monitoring when used in a legitimate way. They are not any type of virus so your anti virus protection will not detect them. You usually install them on your computer through a downloaded file or an opened email so your Firewall will not usually detect them as a breech of security issue.

Important Update From Bruce M. !! Read Completely:  It used to be that this adware/spyware intrusion was an occasional problem that was an inconvenience from time to time. The best way to combat PC problems was on a preventative scale using adware removal software. Over the last month we have personally experienced an epidemic of PC intrusion and PC manipulation from these types of programs. Now even if you have virus protection and firewall protection these adware/spyware types of programs are infiltrating computers across the world in massive numbers.
